Katherine K. Hanley, Secretary of the Commonwealth

Recently retired as Chairman (at-large) of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, Ms. Hanley was first elected Chairman during a special election held in February, 1995; elected to a full 4-year term in November 1995; and reelected in 1999. Prior to her election as Chairman, she represented Providence District on the Board of Supervisors. She was first elected Providence District Supervisor in 1986, and re-elected in 1987 and 1991. Before serving on the Board of Supervisors, she served one term on the Fairfax County School Board. While on the Board of Supervisors, she served as:

• Chairman and Member, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (METRO) Board of Directors;
• Chairman and Member, Northern Virginia Regional Commission;
• Chairman and Member, Metropolitan Washington Air Quality Committee;
• Vice-Chairman and Member, Metropolitan Washington Transportation Planning Board;
• Chairman and Member, the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission.
• Member, Northern Virginia Transportation Authority
• President (1995-1996), Virginia Association of Counties and member of the Board of Directors (1987-2003);
• President (1997-1998), Virginia Municipal League;
• Member, Board of Directors, Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments;
• Member, Virginia Institute of Government Advisory Committee;
• Chairman, Northern Virginia Regional Partnership (Workforce Development);
• Chairman, Board of Supervisors Information Technology Subcommittee;

She received the following recognition:

• Washington Council of Agencies Excellence in Public Policy Award, 2002;
• Jewish Community Council of Greater Washington Distinguished Service Award, 2002;
• Washingtonian of the Year, 2000;
• The Mental Health Association of Northern Virginia Award, 1995;
• Elizabeth and David Scull Metropolitan Public Service Award 1999;
• Greater Merrifield Business Association Public Servant of the Year Award, 1992;

Prior to her appointment as Secretary, she served as the President and CEO of the Greater Reston Arts Center (GRACE).  Her community service included:

• The Commonwealth Transportation Board, Northern Virginia District Member, 2004-2006;
• The Secure Virginia Panel (Homeland Security), 2002-2006;
• Volunteer Fairfax Board of Directors, 2004-2006;
• Chair, Fairfax-Falls Church United Way Campaign, 2004;

She continues to serve on the INOVA Health Care Services Board of Trustees; the Fairfax Partnership for Youth Board of Directors; and the Sorenson Institute Northern Virginia Advisory Board.

Ms. Hanley was previously employed as a counselor at the University of Missouri and as a teacher and guidance counselor for the City of Falls Church public schools. She was a small business owner/operator of a hardware store.

Ms. Hanley received a B.A. degree in French Civilization and a B.S. degree in Secondary Education from the University of Missouri where she was Phi Beta Kappa. She received her M.A.T. from Harvard University in Social Science. She is married to Edward J. Hanley and they have two adult children.
